Wyoming's Cowboy Slogan Called ‘Racist’

Wyoming's Cowboy Slogan Called ‘Racist’

7/10/2018 6:31:00 AM/Categories: Popular Posts, General News, Today's Top 5, Livestock, Grains

A new slogan at the University of Wyoming – “The world needs more cowboys” – is drawing criticism as racist, sexist and counterproductive to recruiting out-of-state students.

Associate professor Christine Porter told The Laramie Boomerang the new slogan evokes images of stereotypical western icons in the minds of some faculty and misrepresents UW’s research and educational goals.

“I care most about our university having a slogan that makes all people feel welcome here,” Porter said. “That’s what I care most about. I also care about us not embarrassing ourselves as an institution across the nation. However proud this state is of our cowboy tradition, it just does not translate outside the Rocky Mountain West.”

The objections are two-fold. Porter said the slogan both fails to be inclusive and fails to accurately represent UW to those outside Wyoming.

“For me, the clearest reason it’s unacceptable is the word ‘boy,’ excluding anyone who identifies as female,” she said.

The UW Committee on Women and People of Color also object to the new slogan. The organization wrote a letter to UW Director of Communications Chad Baldwin and University president Laurie Nichols, asking them to “shelve that slogan and find another one that represents the diversity of people and cultures that we have, and want to have, at UW.”

Faculty Senate Chair Donald O’Toole told The Boomerang he shared Porter’s concern about the baggage that so often comes with the term “cowboy” thanks to media depictions.

“It means someone who just kind of takes risks and can sometimes be a knucklehead,” he said. “Now, that’s not how cowboys are seen here, but the university really needs to balance the positive image that cowboys have here with the possibly negative image that cowboys may have elsewhere in the country, especially if they’re interested in bringing in a higher proportion of out-of-state students.”

The slogan is part of a $1.4 million investment to advertise to prospective students in and outside Wyoming. The university paid a Colorado marketing firm $500,000 to develop the campaign.

Go cowboys. In school, in the arena, on the ranch. Real Western women are not offended by words. We are too busy working and playing side by side with our cowboys.

Are you freaking kidding!!! This political correct B.S. is getting completely out of hand!!!! Is Porter suggesting it should be changed to something more along the lines of "Cowtperson"? Does she feel this would be more acceptable to the world outside the Rocky Mountain region? Give me a break!!!! If she doesn't like the logo, she can always move to a state outside the Rocky Mountain region that would be more pleasing to her "sensitive" needs. I'm from Montana, born and raised, but I always have and always will have Wyoming's back as the Cowboy State. I'm sure she finds the name "The Cowboy State" offensive as well. Probably wants to change it to The Cowperson State. My Lord, when is this garbage going to stop!!!!!

I'm from Montana, but this socialist propaganda must be stopped in it's tracks. If they don't like it then don't go to University of WY. Their need for control is growing and people need to put a boot in it! This political correctness, or so they call it is really about control and pushing their agenda, until the population accepts it, well I can only speak for myself, but it's NEVER going to happen, NEVER! Those who push this agenda and yes it's an agenda, also preach tolerance, think about that for a minute or two.

Be proud to be a cowboy!!!! Don’t back down to the “ sensitive” ones. They couldn’t handle a winter in Wyoming anyway. Stand strong don’t cave.

Hahaha that's like saying Boise needs more Broncos, or Florida State needing more Seminoles. It's the flippin' mascot of the school. This is the most unintelligent statement I have ever heard from any person, ever.

I'm a New England Yankee. To me the term "cowboy" denotes strength, ethics, morality, a sense of honor. Cowboys come in all colors, genders, and religions. You've either got it or you don't.

There is no reason for anyone to be upset with the word "Cowboy." It is a very inclusive word.

First syllable, "Cow" refers to the Female gender, whereas as opposed to the male, which is called the"Bull."

The second syllable "Boy" speaks for itself. So "Cowboy" is an "Inclusive" term that includes both Female and Male. So let us cheer, "Go Cowboys!"

I'm becoming concerned at the extremes of the "Political Correctness" of this country. I don't know about you, but this woman needs to go where they believe this craziness. It isn't here - I see the "Cowboy" as someone who has honor, integrity, work ethic with morals. What she doesn't get is that maybe that's exactly what so many people are looking for as they are tired of what they are getting at other colleges - And that's the exact slogan that will bring people in - because it's what sets them aside from the rest - Keep the slogan - get rid of her!

Stupid Left Wing liberals need to go back to where they came from! ND hockey team had to change their name from Sioux, even tho the Sioux didn’t mind a bit about that name. People, this is our new educational system, socialistic fools, and WE send our kids there to be educated by them! Make sure your student is prepared for the brainwashing!

The world does need more cowboys, strong individuals that know how to work hard, hunker down in a storm and lend a hand to those who need it. It is the strident whiners like Porter who, need to cowboy up. Mr. O’Toole, stop validating her senseless ramblings. It is a shame that you people teach our children.

The University of Wyoming, stand for something, it will mean more to your recruitment then bending to the drivel pouring out of adolescent minds.

As long as I remember the Wyoming Cowboy has represented a Western way of life and that was for everyone. The term Cowboy is generic and has nothing to do with gender or race.

This is the Midwest. Cowboys are part of it! Hard working, loyal and honest! This is the right slogan for this part of the country. If you dont like it then you have no idea what the people in this part of the country are all about! And you should find another place to go!

This slogan is exactly what they should use if they want to recruit. Many kids throughout the nation need to know where to get close to the kind of culture they are interested in. If they pick a generic "millennial" slogan like 'Greatness & Understanding with All' it will run the talented youth off!

So why do we funnel so much money to bloated salaries at the University of Wyoming when the UW faculty and administration compromise the very values of our State?

Nearly all of the highest salaries in the state of Wyoming are University of Wyoming employees! Of the top 250 state employees over 80% work for UW. More than state physicians, attorneys, district super intendants, city managers, the Governor, etc. Great gig with tenure, benefits, work conditions that we all pay for. We then get to fund their pensions for 20-30 years based on the highest rate of pay in the state. Check it Out scroll as far as you like and it takes a long time to get through the UW employees.

And WHO is intolerant? Porter and O'Toole express the same narrow minded, one-sided drivel that their Socialist cohorts spew daily. They must have flunked American history or ignored it completely. I am sickened by these arrogant snobs who call themselves Americans. My guess is that they have NEVER been self-employed, content to live on tenured salaries provided by tax-payers funding of "education". It is terrifying they hold the positions they do, because they obviously have NO tolerance for any viewpoint but their own.

Seriously? How petty can you get? Because of people like you, we are losing rights and have to watch every word we say because it might be construed as "offensive." Take a chill pill and relax. Society has become to uptight. Why don't you worry about the fact that people are no longer exercising manners or treating people with respect? How about all the commercials telling people it is okay to shun your neighbor or run over someone to get a toy. Use your time to fix society, not break it!!!!! You are continuing to create a wedge. All this hate and violence on social media and you are concerned that "Cowgirl" was not used in place of or inclusive of "Cowboy." REALLY? Is this just to get attention? Why don't you do what Katrina Zarutskie did? Jump into shark infested water for a picture on instagram. I am tired of hearing this crap and just want to live in a peaceful world. Too many people like you just love drama and will do anything to cause problems and make the world a turbulent place. Maybe you should leave. Go to a country where there is no freedom of speech. Maybe then you will be happy. Absolutely ridiculous and petty. Why don't you talk about all the corruption with insurance companies and cheating Americans? Why we are forced to pay for something that does not exist? Why not use your time to fight for something that actually matters?

If a person looks back on the cowboy way of life, you will see they are the least racist of all. When there was still slavery, you could find black cowboys. There were also American Indian cowboys, and even Chinese and Japanese. Those who find the new slogan offensive don't understand the cowboy way of life.
