2015 Montana Wool Growers Ram & Ewe Sale

by

Join the Montana Wool Growers for their 90th Annual Ram Sale and 2nd Annual Ewe Sale!

With fall approaching, all eyes turn to Miles City and the 90th Annual Montana Ram Sale and 2nd Annual Montana Ewe Sale.  Consignors are busy collecting the final data and sorting rams and ewes for the sale.  We have a packed schedule planned for the 16th and 17th of September in Miles City.

Wednesday at 10 am an expanded MSU Sheep Seminar will be held at the Fort Keogh Research Facility.  This year’s program will focus on sheep genetics, NSIP, and how value based lamb marketing is working in the Superior plant.   Lunch and more comfortable seats will be provided.  The seminar should run till about 3 pm and everyone should have an hour to check into their motels and get ready for the social.  Back at the fairgrounds , the social will kick off at 5 pm.  The Miles City Chamber will be fixing a light supper of lamb sliders from Montana Natural Lamb in Big Timber and the Bison Bar will have a cash bar.  This year we will be toasting Dr. Lisa Surber and honoring her service to the sheep industry through the Montana Sheep Institute and managing the Montana Wool Lab.  The ewe sale starts at 6 pm and we’ll have 1,300 of the best ewes available in the state.  These are Montana born and bred ewes and ewe lambs from reputation ranches.  Most of these ewes are out of rams purchased at the Montana Ram Sale in previous years and many of the lots have NSIP data and are registerable.

On Thursday morning, some buyers will return to the fairgrounds earlier than others to look over the 300 range ready rams for this year’s Montana Ram Sale.  This sale has emerged as a national leader on providing scrapie codon, NSIP data, production records, ribeye scans, and micron results so buyers know exactly what they’re bidding on.  Lunch will in the sale barn this year from 11 am till 2 pm to make it easier on buyers and consignors alike.  You’ll have your choice of either a premium braut or BBQ lamb sandwich to choose from and all the net proceeds are being donated to the new 4-H livestock building on the fairgrounds.  You can watch and bid live on both sales at the Frontier Livestock website.

Watch for catalogs to be online after September 1 on the Montana Woolgrowers and Frontier Stockyards websites.  It looks to be a very busy week for ram and ewe buyers around the region and I hope to see you in Miles City in September.
