According to an article on Digital Trends, this is the year for wearable digital tracking devices and livestock are no exception. Utilizing similar technology to the popular fitness tracker “FitBit”, Quantified Ag has developed an livestock health tracing device attached to an ear tag that tracks cattle health.
Managers can use a computer dashboard application to track cattle health, while pen riders can use the mobile app to check individual tags. We do wonder if bosses will think their riders are being as productive if they spend most of their morning checking their phone. However, early sickness detection may lower vet bills and death loss when the device provides early notice that something is potentially wrong through body temperature and movement such as steps and head position.
One thing we couldn't find on the Quantified Ag website was a price, or much information outside of the promotional video, for that matter. While we were more skeptical of the practical application of a calving sensor applied to a pregnant cows tail, the potential value of this device in a feedlot setting has more appeal. Particularly in light of recent crackdown on antibiotic use, this device may pay for itself. Will it be a complete replacement for boots on the ground (or in the saddle), maybe not, but may make pen checking more effective and efficient. We'd love to hear your thoughts!
