The callery pear tree was found, still alive under all the debris of the Twin Towers collapse. A decision was made to try to save the tree and it was the last living thing to leave the wreckage at the World Trade Center. It was replanted in a nearby park, with a hope that it could be nursed back to health. As it blossomed back to life the following spring, it earned the name Survivor Tree and came to be a symbol of rebirth and resiliency in the face of all the destruction of 9/11.
