Black troopers of “A” Troop U.S. Tenth Cavalry stand steady on their mounts on the parade grounds of Fort Keogh near Miles City in about 1892. Black military men after the Civil War were sent west in 1866 and played a significant role in Montana history serving at Fort Keogh, Fort Shaw, Fort Maginnis, Fort Custer, Fort Assiniboine, Fort Harrison, and Fort Missoula. They became known as Buffalo Soldiers.
