Big Weekend for MSU Colt Sale

by

The 11th Annual Top of the West Horse Sale and Ranch Horse Competition was held this past weekend at the Copper Spring Ranch in Bozeman, MT. The event was hosted by the Equine Boosters of MSU.

The idea of the sale was brought up over a decade ago by booster member Bob Hanson with the Montana Horse Company in White Sulphur Spring, MT. The mission of the Equine Boosters of MSU “is to serve as a network that supports the needs of the equine education program at Montana State University.”

The MSU Colt Starting Class is instructed by Reata Brannaman and Isaac Johnson. Students who are enrolled in the class are paired up with colts and they have two semesters to learn and grow together.

This year’s Top of the West Horse Sale raised over $155,550. The proceeds raised by the Equine Boosters of MSU will go directly to benefit the Equine Science Program in Montana State University College of Agriculture.

On Friday, the Colt Starting Competition and Consigned Ranch Horse Competition was held.

The Consigned Ranch Horse Competition was made up of consigned horses from the ranchers that generously donate colts to the MSU Colt Starting Class. Both the consigned horses and the MSU colts and their riders were judged on their talent, skill, experience and a set pattern.
