Brucellosis Leads to Depopulation in Texas

by

KRGV reports that a rancher in Starr County, Texas has been forced to depopulate his herd of 38 cattle after at least 8 of them tested positive for brucellosis.  The state is reportedly now in the process of testing more cattle in the surrounding areas.  The case, which was confirmed at the end of January by the Texas Animal Health Commission, represents the first time in over five years that brucellosis has been found in a Texas cattle herd.

Dr. Marty Zaluski, Montana’s State Veterinarian, discussed the case in Texas and told us it highlights a possible shortcoming in the brucellosis testing rules.
