Clowning Around Was Taken Seriously in Early Days of Rodeo

by

George Mills was one of the first rodeo clowns (now called bullfighters on the modern rodeo circuit) to hurdle a bull in the arena. He took up the job in the 1930s to pay his fees to compete in his events which were bareback riding and steer wrestling. In 1941 he won the world bareback riding title, and in 1945 was honored by the rodeo bull riders with a trophy buckle for his, perhaps, more dangerous work of protecting them in the arena.
