Debates for Montana’s District 2 Congressional seat highlighted where candidates stand on issues important to Ag and rural communities.
“Montanans can make an educated decision about who they vote for in June’s primary because of these debates,” said Walter Schweitzer, president of Montana Farmers Union, which sponsored the debates.
Democratic candidates at the debate at the CMR High School in Great Falls on Friday included Ming Cabrera, John Driscoll, Kevin Hamm, and Steve Held attended the debate, which was moderated by Mike Dennison.
Three days prior to the debate in Great Falls was the Republican Debate, which was held at MSU Northern in Havre. Also moderated by Mike Dennison, the Republican debate included discussion between candidates Ken Bogner, Ric Holden, Kyle Austin, and Joel Krautter.
The candidates differed on many things, but they all agreed issues such as inflation, corporate consolidation, and access to health care need to be addressed. They also agreed mandatory Country of Origin labeling for beef and pork would benefit producers and consumers.
“It was good to hear from all candidates, both political parties, all supporting country of origin labeling,” Schweitzer said, adding the Republican and Democratic candidates who participated in the debates demonstrated a knowledge of agriculture and rural Montana with their answers to debate questions.
