HELENA, Mont. (AP) — The state Livestock Department might have to lay off or furlough some employees to close a $300,000 budget shortfall.

Lee Newspapers of Montana report the state Board of Livestock discussed the possible cuts Tuesday.

The department has until the end of the fiscal year on June 30, 2015, to make up the shortfall.

Department Executive Officer Christian Mackay will make recommendations to the board to consider during a Dec. 18 meeting.

It wasn't immediately clear how many employees might be laid off or furloughed. The department has a $10 million annual budget and 140 workers.

Officials blame the budget problem on spending for brucellosis tests in previous years, a smaller contribution from the state general fund for laboratory expenses and a decline in income from brand inspections.
