Economic Outlook Seminars in Eastern MT to Focus on Ag Policy Issues, Local and Statewide Economic Forecasts

by Colter Brown

The next five-year Farm Bill and the changes it will bring to Montana agricultural producers, along with access to export markets, will be a focus of the Economic Outlook Seminar to be held in Sidney and Miles City.

The University of Montana Bureau of Business and Economic Research and the Montana State University Department of Agricultural Economics and Economics are partnering to bring the Economic Outlook Seminar with special emphasis on agricultural policy issues and forecasts to Sidney on Tuesday, March 11, and to Miles City on Wednesday, March 12.

“The politics of the Farm Bill are complex and create a great deal of uncertainty around future farm policy,” according to Joel Schumacher, associate extension specialist in the Department of Agricultural Economics and Economics at Montana State University. “Additionally, growth in Montana agriculture has relied on access to foreign markets. The new administration has imposed or proposed new tariffs on products coming into the country and this may create challenges for agricultural producers selling products outside the United States. Future U.S. trade policy will be an area for the agricultural sector to watch closely in 2025.”

In addition to an in-depth look at agricultural policy in Montana, BBER and MSU will present the economic forecast for the local area economy and for Montana. Keynote speaker Paul Gladen, associate vice president for Research and Economic Development at the University of Montana, will focus on generative AI and how it could change the way we do our jobs and how the economy operates.

The Economic Outlook Seminar will be held in the following cities:

Sidney – Tuesday, March 11, 2025, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. – MSU Richland County Extension, 1499 North Central

Miles City – Wednesday, March 12, 2025, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.. – Sleep City Inn & Suites, 1006 South Haynes Avenue
