Wyoming continues to go its own way when it comes to hunting, approving proposed regulations for the gray wolf to be shot on sight in most of the state, and establishing a hunting season for the declining sage grouse.

The Wyoming Game and Fish Commission last week passed its future guidelines for gray wolf hunting, should the animal be de-listed by the federal government later this year.

The wolf was re-introduced to Yellowstone National Park in 1995, and its numbers quickly grew beyond the confines of the greater Yellowstone area, to the anger of area ranchers. The new regulations establish pack numbers and sizes, and will classify the wolf as a predator in about three quarters of Wyoming, meaning it is always in season, there will be no limit on how many can be killed, and no license is needed.

The wolf will be classified as a trophy game animal, however, in designated areas closer to Yellowstone National Park, with 52 animals allowed to be taken in the first year.

Meanwhile, the commission also approved another year of sage grouse hunting in the northeast corner of the Wyoming (Hunt Area 4), despite concerns about declining numbers, and the potential for listing by the federal government.
