Let the Combines Roll! Wheat Harvest Underway

Behind in South Dakota but ahead in Montana, winter wheat harvest has begun.

In Monday afternoon's round of National Ag Statistics Service Crop Progress reports, we learned that more than half of the nation's corn crop has silked and one-fifth of the soybeans have set pods.

More important to our region, though, is the fact that the winter wheat harvest is now underway.  As of this past Sunday, 5{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} of Montana's winter wheat had been harvested as had 4{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} of South Dakota's.  That's actually a little bit ahead of schedule in Montana (five-year average of 2{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} harvested at this time) while it's substantially behind in South Dakota (five-year average of 32{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48}).  In Wyoming, 97{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} of the crop is coloring as is 53{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} of the winter wheat in North Dakota.

On the livestock side, range and pasture conditions in Montana, at 52{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} good-to-excellent, are a touch worse than they wore at this time in 2013. That said, at 78{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} good-to-excellent, they are dramatically better in Wyoming.  North Dakota is also looking good with 85{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} of range receiving those top two ratings.  South Dakota compares at 77{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48}.
