The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) Wildlife Services (WS) program and MSU’s Carbon County Extension are co-hosting a free workshop on methods to prevent losses of domestic animals to wildlife for all farmers and ranchers on January 17, 2018 at 5:30 pm at the Carbon County Fairgrounds, 94 Rodeo Road, Red Lodge, MT. No registration is necessary.
Any producer can experience loss due to predation, and producers can expect to learn about the practical use of preventative measures to reduce predation to cattle, sheep, goats, beehives and poultry. This workshop will provide demonstrations on non-lethal methods and the science-based information that goes into developing an integrated plan to manage damage caused by predators.
“We love partnering with Montana State University Extension to help teach producers of all sizes of operations more about preventative methods for managing predators,” said John Steuber, APHIS’ State Director in Montana and supervisory wildlife biologist for the area. “WS-Montana is looking forward to sharing with the public our current efforts to integrate non-lethal techniques into our predator damage management program. We have seen a positive response from producers, and our hope is that these techniques will help them protect their livelihoods and reduce predator conflicts.”
Presentations will include livestock grouping, local area updates on wolves and grizzly bear activity, community organization, and electric fencing and will feature guest speakers from USDA APHIS WS, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, the Tom Miner Basin Association, and more.
