Railroads play a major role in the history of Montana. You can almost feel the power of Northern Pacific steam engine Number 5106e as it approaches the west end of the Bozeman Tunnel in 1939. Montana and the nation have long had a romance with trains — none more enduring than that of Warren McGee who took this photograph. This Livingston railroad worker donated his incredible collection of Montana railroad photographs to the Montana Historical Society in 1998.Now his love of trains and the stories they tell are a treasured part of Montana’s past.
