Authorities charged a Natrona County man with animal cruelty on Monday after he allegedly used a dog chain to drag his horse down a road, causing the horse to bleed, according to an incident report from the Natrona County Sheriff’s Office.

Dennis Good told deputies he attached a dog chain to his pickup and haltered it to his mare to lead the horse down the road. Good said he was taking the mare to a neighbor’s house in order to separate the horse from its newborn colt because the horse was acting aggressive. The neighbor called authorities when she realized the mare had been injured.

Deputies inspected the mare and found it had swelling to both sides of its neck, the report states. The bridge of mare’s nose was red with blood, as was the underside of its jaw. The mare’s rear legs were also bleeding.

Deputies found pools of blood on the road in front of Good’s home, according to the report. They also found drag marks they believed were caused by the mare’s hind feet. The drag marks totaled a distance of more than 200 feet.
