Frank Mitloehner, PhD, UC Davis, and Dale Moore, American Farm Bureau, Washington, D.C., are the headline speakers slated for the Montana Farm Bureau Annual Convention Nov. 11-14 at the Billings Hotel and Convention Center.
Mitloehner is renowned for his research that debunked the “cows are the major cause of global warming” myth. The air quality research specialist joined together with colleagues in 2009 to conduct their own research when a study from the U.N.’s Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) claimed bovine and other livestock contributed 18 percent to global warming.
The researcher was recently named by the United Nations to chair a committee within the U.N.’s Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) to measure and assess the environmental impacts of the livestock industry. Mitloehner will speak during theWomen’s Leadership Committee Luncheon Monday, Nov. 12.
“The fact Dr. Mitloehner was selected by the United Nations to chair that committee is impressive, and it’s very exciting our members will have the opportunity to hear this well-known researcher talk about putting scientific fact before bias,” says Montana Farm Bureau President Bob Hanson.
Another notable speaker is Dale Moore, Deputy Executive Director, International & Agriculture Policy, for American Farm Bureau. Moore was appointed by President Bush as USDA’s chief of staff and served all four individuals appointed as Secretary of Agriculture by the President (Ann M. Veneman, Mike Johanns, Chuck Conner (acting) and Ed Schafer). He also provided transition assistance to President Obama’s agricultural advisors.
Moore will provide a Washington update, talking about the fate of the farm bill and other policy changes that may occur after the Nov. 6 general election. Moore will speak on Tuesday, Nov. 13 at the Young Farmer and Rancher Luncheon.
“These national speakers show the value of attending our annual convention, as well as the importance of belonging to Montana Farm Bureau,” says Hanson. “We are looking forward to having more than 400 Farm Bureau members attending our convention.”
Other convention activities include Hoofin’ It for Hunger, a 5K run early Sunday afternoon, along with the MFB Foundation Youth Speech Contest and an Ag Safety workshop. Additional informative workshops are scheduled for Monday, with the important delegate session Tuesday where Farm Bureau members discuss and vote on policy for 2013.
