The Fourth of July weekend and barbecue, what could be a better combination?  The 13th Annual Montana BBQ Cook-off was hosted this July 5 in Absarokee Montana, drawing in 30 teams from 8 states competing for cash and a chance to the big Kansas City cook-off.

The teams compete in 4 categories plus the overall.  The categories are:  chicken, pork ribs, pork and brisket.  The overall prize is $12,000 and a trip to the Kansas City BBQ Contest.  Thousands of people flock to the small Montana town each year for the cook-off to sample and vote on their favorite barbecue.

Charlene Rich, with Northern Broadcasting was at the cook-off and stopped to visit with Rick Wagner, a CPA with Eide Bailly who loves to cook barbecue.  He was one of the competitors this weekend and has been competing in barbecue cook-offs for the past three years, but this was his first trip to Montana.  Rick has been cooking forever he says.  Started cooking for friends and grew into this type of competition.  Rick came up with the Smoking Timbers BBQ name from the neighborhood where he lives at in Colorado called Timbers.
