The Montana Historical Society has grown up with Montana in the last 150 years since it was founded in Virginia City. In 1928 the MHS Museum was in the basement of the State Capitol. Exhibit cases like these containing Native American artifacts lined the basement hallway.

History doesn’t stop and neither does the job of collecting and preserving it. MHS moved across the street to its current building in the 1950s as it outgrew the basement area, and is working hard to deal with overcrowding problems today. History does repeat itself.
