In the meantime, looking at the latest Crop Progress Reports from the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service…
- Lincoln County Wyoming has already reported the first fall overnight freezes.
- Eighty-four percent of the Wyoming barley harvest is complete and winter wheat planting, at 4{e7e4ba4d9a3c939171d79cae1e3a0df1d41e5a91c3c4158fbb92284b490bc9d3} complete, has begun.
- Montana’s spring wheat harvest has progressed to 49{e7e4ba4d9a3c939171d79cae1e3a0df1d41e5a91c3c4158fbb92284b490bc9d3} with some reports of grasshoppers and hail damage and even though we had a heck of a time getting that crop in this year, harvest is actually ahead of last year. In 2010, 32{e7e4ba4d9a3c939171d79cae1e3a0df1d41e5a91c3c4158fbb92284b490bc9d3} of the spring wheat was harvested at this time. The 5-year average is 37{e7e4ba4d9a3c939171d79cae1e3a0df1d41e5a91c3c4158fbb92284b490bc9d3}. However, that spring wheat condition rating, at 52{e7e4ba4d9a3c939171d79cae1e3a0df1d41e5a91c3c4158fbb92284b490bc9d3} good-to-excellent, is behind last year’s 77{e7e4ba4d9a3c939171d79cae1e3a0df1d41e5a91c3c4158fbb92284b490bc9d3}.
- All but 2{e7e4ba4d9a3c939171d79cae1e3a0df1d41e5a91c3c4158fbb92284b490bc9d3} of Montana’s winter wheat has been harvested.
- Sixty-five percent of North Dakota spring wheat has been harvested as has 32{e7e4ba4d9a3c939171d79cae1e3a0df1d41e5a91c3c4158fbb92284b490bc9d3} of the durum crop. That’s 14{e7e4ba4d9a3c939171d79cae1e3a0df1d41e5a91c3c4158fbb92284b490bc9d3} and 31{e7e4ba4d9a3c939171d79cae1e3a0df1d41e5a91c3c4158fbb92284b490bc9d3} behind last year respectively.

- While South Dakota producers are now ¾ complete with the 3rd cutting of alfalfa, some crops and pastures are showing stress from lack of rain.
- Six percent of South Dakota’s winter wheat has been seeded.

On a national level, 31{e7e4ba4d9a3c939171d79cae1e3a0df1d41e5a91c3c4158fbb92284b490bc9d3} of the corn crop is now considered to be mature. Fifty-two percent of the crop is considered to be in good to excellent condition. That’s down from last year’s 69{e7e4ba4d9a3c939171d79cae1e3a0df1d41e5a91c3c4158fbb92284b490bc9d3}.
