N. Dakota Planting Starts to Lag Behind

According to DTN, the latest round of USDA crop progress numbers showed that winter wheat condition worsened considerably in the week ended May 4, according to the USDA weekly Crop Progress and Condition report issued Monday afternoon.

Thirty-eight percent of the crop is now rated poor to very poor, compared to 34{0a3336b3da8cf935de4f3eb78fe29508c4b8b5ebd27d01af2d815614325d533e} last week and 39{0a3336b3da8cf935de4f3eb78fe29508c4b8b5ebd27d01af2d815614325d533e} last year. The percent of the crop rated good to excellent fell to 31{0a3336b3da8cf935de4f3eb78fe29508c4b8b5ebd27d01af2d815614325d533e} compared to 33{0a3336b3da8cf935de4f3eb78fe29508c4b8b5ebd27d01af2d815614325d533e} last week.

They report that spring wheat is 26{0a3336b3da8cf935de4f3eb78fe29508c4b8b5ebd27d01af2d815614325d533e} planted, compared to 18{0a3336b3da8cf935de4f3eb78fe29508c4b8b5ebd27d01af2d815614325d533e} last week and a 41{0a3336b3da8cf935de4f3eb78fe29508c4b8b5ebd27d01af2d815614325d533e} five-year average. Emergence is at 7{0a3336b3da8cf935de4f3eb78fe29508c4b8b5ebd27d01af2d815614325d533e}, compared to 5{0a3336b3da8cf935de4f3eb78fe29508c4b8b5ebd27d01af2d815614325d533e} last week and a 17{0a3336b3da8cf935de4f3eb78fe29508c4b8b5ebd27d01af2d815614325d533e} five-year average. “Spring wheat plantings improved in South Dakota to 59{0a3336b3da8cf935de4f3eb78fe29508c4b8b5ebd27d01af2d815614325d533e} and in Montana to 37{0a3336b3da8cf935de4f3eb78fe29508c4b8b5ebd27d01af2d815614325d533e}, but lag behind in North Dakota and Minnesota at 5{0a3336b3da8cf935de4f3eb78fe29508c4b8b5ebd27d01af2d815614325d533e} and 4{0a3336b3da8cf935de4f3eb78fe29508c4b8b5ebd27d01af2d815614325d533e} respectively,” Hultman said.

MONTANA

As mentioned above, spring wheat seeding is 37{0a3336b3da8cf935de4f3eb78fe29508c4b8b5ebd27d01af2d815614325d533e} complete.  That's 7{0a3336b3da8cf935de4f3eb78fe29508c4b8b5ebd27d01af2d815614325d533e} ahead of last year and 4{0a3336b3da8cf935de4f3eb78fe29508c4b8b5ebd27d01af2d815614325d533e} below the five-year average.  Winter wheat condition is 63{0a3336b3da8cf935de4f3eb78fe29508c4b8b5ebd27d01af2d815614325d533e} good-to-excellent.  That's down just slightly on the week and a little better than 2013 and the five-year average.  Fifty-four percent of barley and 65{0a3336b3da8cf935de4f3eb78fe29508c4b8b5ebd27d01af2d815614325d533e} of sugar beets have also been planted.  See full report…

WYOMING

Forty-seven percent of the Wyoming spring wheat was in the ground as of Sunday.  That's 18{0a3336b3da8cf935de4f3eb78fe29508c4b8b5ebd27d01af2d815614325d533e} ahead of last year and 11{0a3336b3da8cf935de4f3eb78fe29508c4b8b5ebd27d01af2d815614325d533e} ahead of the five-year average.  The winter wheat condition, at 48{0a3336b3da8cf935de4f3eb78fe29508c4b8b5ebd27d01af2d815614325d533e} good-to-excellent, is far better than the national average.  Forty-four percent of sugar beets and 77{0a3336b3da8cf935de4f3eb78fe29508c4b8b5ebd27d01af2d815614325d533e} of barley has also been planted.  See full report…

SOUTH DAKOTA

As described earlier, spring wheat planting is moving ahead in South Dakota.  At 59{0a3336b3da8cf935de4f3eb78fe29508c4b8b5ebd27d01af2d815614325d533e} seeded, it's ahead of 41{0a3336b3da8cf935de4f3eb78fe29508c4b8b5ebd27d01af2d815614325d533e} last year but behind the five-year average of 64{0a3336b3da8cf935de4f3eb78fe29508c4b8b5ebd27d01af2d815614325d533e}.  Winter wheat condition is 64{0a3336b3da8cf935de4f3eb78fe29508c4b8b5ebd27d01af2d815614325d533e} good-to-excellent, much better than numbers on the national level.  Like Wyoming, 44{0a3336b3da8cf935de4f3eb78fe29508c4b8b5ebd27d01af2d815614325d533e} of the barley has been planted.  See full report…

NORTH DAKOTA

Spring wheat planting is behind pace in North Dakota.  As of Sunday, 5{0a3336b3da8cf935de4f3eb78fe29508c4b8b5ebd27d01af2d815614325d533e} of the acreage had been seeded.  That's only 1{0a3336b3da8cf935de4f3eb78fe29508c4b8b5ebd27d01af2d815614325d533e} behind last year but is 23{0a3336b3da8cf935de4f3eb78fe29508c4b8b5ebd27d01af2d815614325d533e} behind the five-year average.  Winter wheat conditions are rated at 46{0a3336b3da8cf935de4f3eb78fe29508c4b8b5ebd27d01af2d815614325d533e} good-to-excellent.  Barley seeding is 3{0a3336b3da8cf935de4f3eb78fe29508c4b8b5ebd27d01af2d815614325d533e} complete, also behind average, and 6{0a3336b3da8cf935de4f3eb78fe29508c4b8b5ebd27d01af2d815614325d533e} of sugar beets have been seeded.  See full report…
