NFU Members Come Through to Help End Hunger

by

National Farmers Union again partnered with Feeding America to raise funds and donate produce to food banks in rural communities. NFU members donated nearly 197-thousand dollars to Feeding America and its local food banks – the most raised annually since the campaign’s inception. Farmers Union President Roger Johnson says feeding the less fortunate is not a mission family farmers and ranchers take lightly. He says members of NFU have always sought innovative solutions to food security challenges at home and on the other side of the world. While rural hunger doesn’t always get the same media attention as inner-city poverty – Johnson says anyone who has lived in a rural community knows food insecurity doesn’t discriminate based on geography and is often exacerbated by the distance and isolation of rural areas. Globally – he says some of the most food-insecure families are comprised of smallholder farmers who are themselves food producers.

This was the third year NFU partnered with Feeding America. Many donations were in the form of fresh fruits and vegetables – given to local food banks to provide needy families with fresh, locally grown food. Many youth participating in Farmers Union education programs also donated funds to the campaign. The results of the campaign were announced at the opening of NFU’s annual convention – which continues through today.
