Pig Wrestling: Animal Abuse or Entertainment?

by

A rural fair in Montana is drawing national criticism after announcing “pig wrestling” contests will be held at the annual event.  Global Conservation Group, a national animal advocacy organization out of Wisconsin, said a concerned citizen tipped them off about it, prompting a cruelty investigation. The organization is now calling the event an “illegal animal fight.” They say pigs are “kicked, punched in the face, body-slammed, yelled at, and thrown into a barrel” during the event.

The Northwest Montana Fair is scheduled to host the pig wrestling contest on Friday and Saturday, according to their website.

Hundreds of people have shared the Facebook action alert posted by the group yesterday calling on the event's cancelation. Critics of the event, as far away as Ireland and the United Kingdom have called organizers asking it to be replaced with an alternative activity. The uproar has even caused the Kalispell Chamber of Commerce to make a statement today saying they are passing their concerns “to fair management” in an effort to remedy the controversy.
