Planning for on-farm success workshops in Gallatin County begin March 26

Montana State University Extension in Gallatin County will host the planning for on-farm success four-workshop series starting Saturday, March 26.

Workshops are intended for beginning or experienced farmers and ranchers to improve business skills and provide the skills and resources needed to launch a business in Montana. The planning for on-farm success program is modeled after successful farmer training programs from across the country to help build a sustainable, successful farm business in Montana.

MSU Extension in Gallatin County is partnering with the Community Food and Agriculture Coalition to offer the workshops. Hands-on courses will be taught by agriculture professionals, financial experts and expert farmers.

Classes begin Saturday with farm and ranch financial management. Attendees will gain an understanding of financial management through use of different software. There will be time for individual assistance and specific questions.

The series will continue March 29, covering labor laws and employee management. Attendees will learn about local labor laws, successful hiring practices and employee management skills. The April 5 class will cover marketing for agricultural producers, including how to reach customers and how to make a business stand out. The final class, to be held April 18, will cover land access and financing, and will include a panel of financial experts discussing financing options and panel of producers who will share their experiences of starting and growing their agricultural enterprise.

Classes will be held on the MSU campus in the Animal BioScience Building, room 138.

Registration is available for individual workshops or for all four at a discounted rate of $40. Purchased individually, financial management for farms and ranches is $20, which includes lunch. All other workshops are $10 and include the planning for on-farm success workbook, snacks and refreshments. Please RSVP three working days before each workshop.
