An applicant must be a public or private agency or organization, business, educational institution, local government, or an individual involved with the sweet cherry industry.  Projects should meet one of the following categories: research designed to improve the quality of the cherry crop or improve the cherry industry; outreach programs for current and new research information; development of cherry markets through market assessments, publicity and sales promotion campaigns, or media development and trade show exhibits.  For more information view the complete request for proposals.

The five-member Cherry Advisory Committee will determine fund recipients at their next meeting after the deadline on April 5, 2016, at 5 p.m.

Sweet cherries were introduced to Montana in 1866 and are typically grown in and around Flathead Lake, commonly referred to as Flathead Cherries based on the growing location.  In 2014, Montana produced some 2,010 tons of sweet cherries valued at just over $3.77 million.  The average price per ton was $2,100 according to latest estimates provided by the National Agricultural Statistics Service.
