Ready or Not, Here Comes Harvest!

Farmers, harvesters and grain elevator managers have been scrambling to stay ahead of the ripening wheat as it progresses rapidly across Oklahoma and into Kansas in the earliest harvest many of them have ever experienced.

The first load of wheat arrived at a southern Oklahoma elevator on May 3. That area usually isn’t in the thick of harvest until Memorial Day weekend.

At a popular annual research station tour held in north central Oklahoma, crop specialists drew farmers to educational sessions days or even hours before the surrounding fields were ready to cut, including the test plots on display.  A big concern expressed by many farmers and industry representatives has been whether custom cutters would be available early enough.
