Registration Now Open for 406 Grazing Academy

by Grace McDonald

BOZEMAN – Once again for 2025, Montana State University’s College of Agriculture and Montana Agricultural Experiment Station will co-host the 406 Grazing Academy. MSU’s Dan Scott Ranch Management Program and Northern Agricultural Research Center have teamed up with the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation’s Rangeland Resources Program to put on the event, which will be held June 3-5 in Havre.

The grazing academy is an immersive, three-day hands-on learning experience that aims to deepen attendees’ knowledge of grazing management.

This year’s event will feature educational and campfire speakers, live grazing demonstrations, in-class instruction and tours of the Northern Agricultural Research Center and its facilities.

Academy exercises will include soil health and pasture walks, riparian area grazing, clipping and soil texturing exercises, stocking rate and density demonstrations, plant identification, photo monitoring, animal nutrition and the economics of grazing systems. Presenters will include Dan Scott Ranch Management Program lead Rachel Frost, NRCS and DNRC staff, and local ranchers.

Registration costs $150, which includes lunch and dinner all three days along with educational materials and field exercises. The deadline to register is May 15 or until available seats are filled.

The registration fee does not include hotel and travel costs. A block of rooms has been reserved at the Havre Inn & Suites, and participants can use code “Montana DNRC” for a group discount.

Registration is available at https://www.mtrangelands.org/406ga, and a full agenda can be found at https://www.mtrangelands.org. For questions, contact Frost at frost@montana.edu or DNRC program manager Stacey Barta at sbarta@mt.gov.
