Relax. Talk of an “aporkalypse” is premature

Panic buying has pushed pork belly prices to record highs, but larger supplies are on the way, and a recent rash of headlines in the media suggesting the nation is facing a bacon shortage are misleading, caution analysts in the Daily Livestock Report, published by Steiner Consulting Group.  

Media reports including an NBC News story warning of a looming “aporkalypse” focus on USDA data showing pork belly inventories are the lowest on record. 

However, pork supplies are expected to climb 3.5 percent to 4 percent through the spring, the DLR analysts wrote. The excellent demand that is supporting prices now can be sustained only if those prices remain reasonable to consumers, they caution.
