Soil Health Workshop Dec 10 in Lemmon

 

BROOKINGS, S.D. – Three soil health workshops will to be held across South Dakota in upcoming months. The first is scheduled for Dec. 10, 2015 in Lemmon beginning at 9 a.m. (MST) and running until 4 p.m. at Benny's, (200 Main St. in Lemmon).

 

The workshop will include a number of speakers from SDSU Extension, South Dakota State University and the USDA as well as a farm panel.

 

Speaker lineup as follows:

 

Dr. Mike Lehman, USDA-ARS Soil and Water Research Farm near Brookings. Lehman's field of study is soil microorganisms. His presentation will focus on what is so special about soil microorganisms.

 

Anthony Bly, SDSU Extension Soils Field Specialist, he will discuss soil test interpretation.

 

Dwayne Beck, Manager of The Dakota Lakes Research Farm (SDSU) near Pierre. Beck's presentation will focus on crop and crop/livestock production systems for South Dakota.

 

Jason Miller, Agronomist with the NRCS in Pierre, Miller will share thoughts on selecting cover crops.

 

Producer panel will follow Miller's presentation, which will highlight local producers who have incorporated some or all of these practices into their operations.

 

Jeff Zimprich, NRCS State Conservationist for South Dakota. Zimprich will offer an overview of the day and some thoughts on the value of healthy soil.

 

This event is free to the public. However to accommodate for lunch, organizers are asking that attendees pre-register by calling the SDSU Extension Regional Center in Pierre, 605.773.8120 or e-mail on or before December 7, 2015.
