Spring Planting Begins, Winter Wheat Struggles

by

While our region saw widespread spring conditions during the month of March, that dry wind caused even more stress to a not-so-stellar Montana winter wheat crop.  According to the most recent data from the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service, Montana’s winter wheat is now rated at 28{962fe9be9a8a5c386944bfa41f48d98b010325707b70b1fa6182bcabd27c5d7f} good to excellent.  That’s compared to the 64{962fe9be9a8a5c386944bfa41f48d98b010325707b70b1fa6182bcabd27c5d7f} of the crop that had that rating last year.  However, it is rated slightly better than it was at the end of February.  The winter wheat is showing signs of spring with 28{962fe9be9a8a5c386944bfa41f48d98b010325707b70b1fa6182bcabd27c5d7f} greening, ahead of last year’s 8{962fe9be9a8a5c386944bfa41f48d98b010325707b70b1fa6182bcabd27c5d7f}.  Read full Montana report…
