The Cookie (Dough) Monster

Politico's Morning Agriculture reports:

For all its efforts to fight E. coli, General Mills is still trying to overcome one of the biggest challenges of all: Consumers just won't stop eating raw cookie dough. For now, the industry has to assume that consumers won't follow food safety directions, Scott Hood, General Mills' director of global food safety and regulatory affairs, said at a conference in Savannah, Ga., according to a report by Food Business News.

General Mills learned the hard way. This year, an E. coli outbreak connected to uncooked flour sickened 63 people, 17 of whom were hospitalized. “Really, the prevention is at the level of the consumer use, not so much at the production facility,” Hood said. “That doesn't mean that General Mills doesn't take responsibility here. It was our product, and we tried to do the right thing here, but now we have to think about what other interventions can occur in the future.”
