OMAHA (DTN) — Corn conditions were expected to fall in this week’s USDA Crop Progress report, and they did, although a bit more than pre-report guesses.

Seventeen percent of the nation’s corn crop is rated very poor to poor as of Aug. 21. That compares to 15{e7e4ba4d9a3c939171d79cae1e3a0df1d41e5a91c3c4158fbb92284b490bc9d3} last week and 10{e7e4ba4d9a3c939171d79cae1e3a0df1d41e5a91c3c4158fbb92284b490bc9d3} on average. Fifty-seven percent of the crop is rated good to excellent, compared to 60{e7e4ba4d9a3c939171d79cae1e3a0df1d41e5a91c3c4158fbb92284b490bc9d3} last week and an average of 70{e7e4ba4d9a3c939171d79cae1e3a0df1d41e5a91c3c4158fbb92284b490bc9d3}.

Corn development continues to catch up to an average pace with 73{e7e4ba4d9a3c939171d79cae1e3a0df1d41e5a91c3c4158fbb92284b490bc9d3} of the crop in the dough stage, equal to the five-year average. Percent dented at 33{e7e4ba4d9a3c939171d79cae1e3a0df1d41e5a91c3c4158fbb92284b490bc9d3} is only 4 percentage points behind an average pace.

“Weekly crop conditions fell more than expected,” said DTN Analyst John Sanow, “with pre-report estimates calling for 58{e7e4ba4d9a3c939171d79cae1e3a0df1d41e5a91c3c4158fbb92284b490bc9d3} to 59{e7e4ba4d9a3c939171d79cae1e3a0df1d41e5a91c3c4158fbb92284b490bc9d3} good to excellent. This report could be considered bullish, though contracts would have likely continued to rally regardless based upon the increasingly bullish market structure — strengthening uptrend, weakening carry in futures spreads.”

Soybean conditions also fell, with 14{e7e4ba4d9a3c939171d79cae1e3a0df1d41e5a91c3c4158fbb92284b490bc9d3} of the crop rated very poor to poor, compared to 13{e7e4ba4d9a3c939171d79cae1e3a0df1d41e5a91c3c4158fbb92284b490bc9d3} last week and an average of 13{e7e4ba4d9a3c939171d79cae1e3a0df1d41e5a91c3c4158fbb92284b490bc9d3}. Fifty-nine percent of the soybeans were rated good to excellent, compared to 61{e7e4ba4d9a3c939171d79cae1e3a0df1d41e5a91c3c4158fbb92284b490bc9d3} last week and an average of 64{e7e4ba4d9a3c939171d79cae1e3a0df1d41e5a91c3c4158fbb92284b490bc9d3}.

Soybean development has also caught up to normal, with 88{e7e4ba4d9a3c939171d79cae1e3a0df1d41e5a91c3c4158fbb92284b490bc9d3} of the beans setting pods and 97{e7e4ba4d9a3c939171d79cae1e3a0df1d41e5a91c3c4158fbb92284b490bc9d3} blooming, equal to the five-year averages in both categories.

“Pre-report expectations called for 59{e7e4ba4d9a3c939171d79cae1e3a0df1d41e5a91c3c4158fbb92284b490bc9d3} to 60{e7e4ba4d9a3c939171d79cae1e3a0df1d41e5a91c3c4158fbb92284b490bc9d3} of the crop rated good to excellent,” Sanow said. “There are no surprises in this report, meaning it should be considered neutral.”

Spring wheat harvest continues to lag at 29{e7e4ba4d9a3c939171d79cae1e3a0df1d41e5a91c3c4158fbb92284b490bc9d3}, compared to the five-year average of 56{e7e4ba4d9a3c939171d79cae1e3a0df1d41e5a91c3c4158fbb92284b490bc9d3}. “However, harvest should pick up this week as weather turns more favorable for maturation and cutting activity,” Sanow said. “This report will garner little attention and should be considered neutral.”
