CHEYENNE, WYO – U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has appointed Irv Petsch from Meridan to serve as Wyoming's representative on the Cattlemen's Beef Board.

Authorized by the Beef Promotion and Research Act of 1985, the Cattlemen's Beef Board (CBB) consists of 100 members, including domestic beef, dairy and veal producers, as well as importers of beef and beef products. The Beef Board oversees collection of $1-per-head on all cattle sold in the U.S. and $1-per-head equivalent on imported cattle, beef and beef products. The Beef Board is also responsible for approving the annual budget for its national checkoff-funded programs. For more information about the Cattlemen's Beef Board, visit: http://www.beefboard.org/about/whoweare.asp.

Petsch replaces Spencer Ellis from Lovell who served from 2010 through 2015. Petsch's term begins February 2016.

Each Beef Board member is appointed by the Secretary of Agriculture from nominations submitted by certified nominating organizations. Certified nominating organizations in Wyoming include: Wyoming Stock Growers Association, Wyoming Farm Bureau and Wyoming CattleWomen. The CBB contracts with established national, non-profit, industry-governed organizations to implement programs of promotion, research, consumer information, industry information, foreign marketing, and producer communications.

Petsch brings much knowledge and a long history serving Wyoming through the beef checkoff to the CBB. He served as the feeder member of the Wyoming Beef Council (WBC) from 2001 through 2007 and as a WBC-appointed representation to the Federation of State Beef Councils in 2009 and 2010. He also represented Wyoming on the U.S. Meat Export Federation overseeing beef checkoff funded programs from 2005 through 2014. In addition, he served on the Beef Promotion Operating Committee, the body responsible for developing the checkoff annual budget from 2010 through 2013.

“Irv brings a vast amount of knowledge to the position,” says Ann Wittmann, executive director of the WBC. “I am pleased to know Irv will be serving in this important role for the next three years and I am certain he will make Wyoming's voice heard.”
