Gov.-elect Dennis Daugaard announced that he will appoint Walt Bones of Parker to serve as South Dakota Secretary of Agriculture. The post is currently held by Jon Farris, who has served as Acting Secretary since the resignation of Bill Even earlier this year.

“Walt Bones is an active farmer and rancher and a leader in the ag community,” said Gov.-elect Daugaard. “I have great respect for Walt, and I thank him for agreeing to help me promote our state’s No. 1 industry.”

“I am honored to be asked to serve as Secretary of Agriculture,” said Bones. “I hope that, in this role, I can be an advocate for the family farmers and ranchers who are the backbone of our state’s economy.”

Bones, along with two brothers, a brother-in-law, and three nephews, operates a family farm near Parker that has been in their family since it was homesteaded by his great-grandfather in 1879. Bones and his family raise cattle, run a custom cattle-feeding business, operate a dairy, and raise corn, soybeans, and wheat.
