Water Rights Seminar to be Hosted in Lewistown

Central Montana residents who want to learn more about water rights can register for a free community seminar Understanding Water Rights, to be held 4-6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 14, in Lewistown.

 

Speaker Scott Irvin, regional manager at the Department of Natural Resources and Conservation’s Lewistown Water Resources Office will discuss:

Who needs to file,
Selling and leasing water rights,
Abandonment,
Water rights enforcement,
Impact of drought on water rights,
And more.

Registration and refreshments begin at 4 p.m., the presentation at 4:30, followed by a Q&A session.

“Water right issues are confusing and contentious,” said Irvin. “This presentation will provide a basic understanding of Montana’s system of water law, and discuss steps you can take to protect your water use.”

Citizens are asked to pre-register by Jan. 8 by calling MSU Extension Service Fergus County at 535-3919. Early registration is encouraged as space is limited.

Sponsored by Central Montana Resource Council, Montana Farmers Union, and MSU Fergus Extension. The seminar will be held at the Community Center at 307 W. Watson in Lewistown.
