Winter Wheat Harvest Passes the Halfway Mark!

OMAHA (DTN) — Corn and soybean development continues to progress ahead of last year's pace and conditions remained about steady in the week ended July 6, according to USDA's latest Crop Progress Report.

Corn is 15{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} silked, compared to 5{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} last week and an 18{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} 5-year average. Corn condition ratings were steady with last week at 75{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} good to excellent.

“USDA's good to excellent rating of 75{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} for corn resulted in a DTN Corn Condition Index of 185, up from last week's 184, up from 167 a year ago, and above the five-year average of 149,” said DTN Analyst Todd Hultman. “This report should be viewed as bearish for corn based on the continued high crop rating.”

Soybeans are 24{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} bloomed compared to 10{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} last week and a 21{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} 5-year average. Soybean condition ratings are steady with last week at 72{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} good to excellent.

“USDA's good to excellent rating of 72{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} resulted in a DTN Soybean Condition Index of 176, up from 175 a week ago, up from 160 a year ago, and above the five-year average of 148.6,” Hultman said. “This report should be viewed as bearish due to the slightly improved crop rating.”

Winter wheat is 57{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} harvested, compared to 43{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} last week and a 60{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} 5-year average. Winter wheat conditions improved slightly, moving to 31{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} good to excellent compared to 30{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} last week. “This resulted in a DTN Winter Wheat Index of 26, up from 25 last week, but down from 29 a year ago, and far below the five-year average of 87.6,” said Hultman.

Spring wheat is 47{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} headed compared to 26{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} last week and a 47{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} 5-year average. Spring wheat conditions held steady at 70{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} good to excellent. “This resulted in a DTN Spring Wheat Index of 168, down from 170 a week ago, but even with 168 a year ago and down from the five-year average of 180.4,” said Hultman.

“Monday's report should be viewed as neutral overall for wheat as the improved harvest progress for winter wheat was offset by a slight decline in the spring wheat crop rating.”

Sorghum is 23{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} headed compared to 21{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} last week and a 26{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} 5-year average. Sorghum is 15{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} colored compared to a 20{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} 5-year average. Sorghum condition improved slightly in the last week.

Oats are 80{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} headed compared to 69{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} last week and an 83{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} 5-year average. Barley is 61{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} headed compared to 31{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} last week and a 44{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} 5-year average. Oat and barley conditions held steady in the last week.

Rice is 17{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} headed compared to 9{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} last week and a 14{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} 5-year average. Cotton is 53{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} squaring and 12{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} setting bolls, compared to 36{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} and 7{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} last week and 60{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} and 16{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} 5-year averages. Rice condition improved slightly in the last week while cotton conditions declined slightly.
